I laugh every time I think that I would take health advice from a zombie movie but as silly as it sounds, its true. A few years ago I was watching a popular zombie movie and the main character kept saying the phrase "movement is life" now, he was referring to his military experience and keeping away from zombies, but I have always kept this in mind when thinking about physical health. Movement is life!
Now more than ever, it is important to stay active. Activities like walking, running, swimming, cycling and dancing are important to stay healthy and live a longer life. They also have a great impact on your mental attitude, energy and body weight. There are many aspects of health that will degrade when you do not get enough physical activity.
Benefits of exercise:
- Better Mood
- Weight Loss
- Improved Immune Function
- Strengthen Bones and Muscles
- Reduce Chronic Disease
- Better Skin
- Improved Brain Function
- Better Sleep
- Reduced Pain and Inflammation
So how much exercise is enough?
Many experts say that 30 minutes a day is a good place to start. If you are not doing any, then this may be a great time to jump up and go for a walk. However, the amount of exercise you do depends on many factors like your age, goals and any limitations. More recent guides have suggested that 60 minutes may be more appropriate to sustaining weight and 90 minutes would help to lose weight. If you are unsure how to get started, you could look into some fitness coaching to help set up a plan.
Tips for getting started and staying active:
Make it fun: Try new things like swimming or hiking to change up your activity. Fine something that you enjoy so you stick with it.
Bring a Friend: Not only can having a friend there make it more enjoyable, but you can keep each other accountable to sticking with a plan.
Start slow: Don’t try to take it all on at once. Small sustainable steps can have a longer impact than trying to do it all at once and then risking burnout.
Find a coach: Health and fitness coaches have really started to play a great roll in accountability and planning. Find someone that will encourage you to be your best.
So remember "Movement is life!" Keep moving and keep your body healthy. Your future self will thank you for taking steps to get and stay healthy.
Until next time. Make good choices and stay healthy! 😀
