Did you know that about 80% of new Gym memberships that start in January, fail within 5 months? How crazy is that. Years ago, my wife worked in as a personal trainer and every January she was busier than ever. Each year a fresh new batch of new years resolution driven clients vow to begin their journey into better health only to fade into the distance as the days pass.
I always found it fascinating that people would spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars, only to walk away and leave their sessions or memberships to expire.
So, I was giving this some thought and wanted to explore what makes some successful and others unsuccessful in taking on a new health goal. I was reminded of times when I decided to make a health change and what made the difference in my success. One of the major contributors I thought of was accountability.
Here are a few tips for setting up some good accountability to keep you on track.
#1 - Post your goals
It doesn’t matter if your goals are big or small getting them in front of your face will make them more tangible. Write them down and better yet tell your friends.
What happens when you make a goal and don’t tell people?
NOTHING!! There is no accountability or consequences.
Set up a system that ensures there is some sting to not meeting your goals and sticking to your plan.
Pro Tip: Go big!! Be bold and post your goals for all the world to see. But, make sure the goals are realistic.
#2 - Build your tribe
Your tribe is your social group. This could be your friends, your coworkers and your family. Surround yourself with those who will support your goals.
If you are setting a health goal, you need to be supported in that decision. Surround yourself with those who will encourage you and even show a little tough love when you start to or are tempted to stray. If you those around you are not actively supporting your decisions, it can slowly break down your commitment to your goals.
Pro Tip: The more your tribe is aligned with you the easier it is to stay on track. Try setting your goals with a friend or a spouse and keep each other on track.
#3 - Get a coach
Health coaching is a rather new thing. In the past personal trainers and various others would help to guide people through a program that works for them. But, now with technology you can find a health coach to work with you virtually, anywhere in the world.
A health coach can help to guide you and set goals that are realistic. Sometimes the hardest thing to do when trying to change your health is to slow down and take small steps that will last. A coach can help you stay accountable and not over estimate your ability and fall short. Setting and meeting your goals is key to lasting success and long term change.
Pro Tip: Find a coach that works for you. There are many different styles out there. If you are getting started remember this is a big decision and you are interviewing them for a position in your tribe.
Holding yourself accountable is key to lasting success. Don’t wait until January to make a major change only to burn out 5 months later. Start today with small meaningful changes and set up your accountability system.
Until next time. Make good choices and stay healthy! 😀
